The Cake Business Brain Podshots: One Question. One Person.

The questions bakers are curious about, answered by the people they'd love to ask.

Ever wondered how another baker comes up with their recipes? What happens behind the scenes when they create content? What bit of kit they couldn't do their job without?  Maybe what lucky item of clothing they wear every time they're filming?  Or a more practical question about their baking business.

Sometimes you don't want everyone's answer. You want that person's answer.

And you don't want to wade through hours of audio content for that nugget - you want a quick voice note to satisfy your curiosity.

That's the idea behind this new strand of The Cake Business Brain: Podshots - One Person, One QUestion

What's it all about?

The Cake Business Brain: Podshots is my short-form audio series exploring the realities of running a cake business, baking, creating content and everything that goes on behind the scenes.

This new strand started with conversations with other bakers and a shared curiosity about the people whose work we admire. I'm starting with questions of my own, but the longer-term plan is to invite other bakers to nominate someone whose experience they'd love to learn from, and put their questions to them.

It might be a question about recipe development, running a business, pricing, food hygiene, content creation or one of those little things you've always wondered about.

It doesn't have to be a famous name or an industry celebrity. It just needs to be someone whose answer you'd genuinely love to hear.

How does it work?

1. Someone asks a question.

Initially, these will be questions from me. As the series develops, I'll invite other bakers to submit questions for people they admire.

2. I approach the person.

I'll contact the person who's been nominated, explain the question and ask whether they'd be happy to contribute. There's no obligation to take part.

3. How they take part

No interview, no scheduled call and no fancy recording equipment required!

Just grab your phone, open the voice recorder app and record yourself answering the question in your own words.

Around 1–3 minutes is ideal. No need to script it or make it sound polished — I want to hear you, not a radio presenter!

When you're happy with your recording, send it my way via WhatsApp or email (or Insta/Facebook Messenger if that's easier for you).

If you're happy to, I'd also love a photo of you - or your business logo - to use in the episode artwork. That's completely optional, though — no pressure if you'd rather not! If you send one over, I'll use it alongside your Podshot on Spotify, my website and social media.

That's it. I'll take care of the editing and putting your Podshot together. I'll also let you know how I'll use your recording and get your permission before publishing it.

4. I turn it into a Podshot.

I'll edit the recording into a short episode for Spotify, potentially adding my own thoughts, observations or business lessons where they're useful. Some answers might speak for themselves, and that's fine too.

What's in it for contributors?

I'm interested in sharing useful knowledge, real experiences and the personalities behind the baking content we see every day.

Contributors will be credited in the episode, with their business name and a link to their website or preferred social channel in the episode description.

The focus is on answering the question and sharing experience, rather than creating an advert or sales pitch. There's no need to promote products or services in the recording.

I'll explain how the recording will be used before anything is published, and I'll ask for permission to use the audio.

A quick note about your recording

Your contribution may be edited and published on Spotify, Instagram, Facebook and my website, including promotional posts about the episode. I'll ask your permission before using it for anything outside those channels.

Before you send your recording, please read the Podshots section of my Privacy Policy for information about how your recording and personal details will be used.

I'll also ask you to confirm in writing that you're happy for your recording to be edited and published before the episode goes live.

Want to ask your baking idol a question?

As the series develops, I'll be inviting bakers to tell me who they'd love to hear from and what they'd like to ask them.

Perhaps there's a baker whose creative process fascinates you, someone who's built a business you admire, or an expert who could answer a question you've been wondering about for ages.

You don't need to know them personally, and your question doesn't have to be profound. It just needs to be something you'd genuinely like to know.

Because sometimes, the best answer comes from the person you wanted to ask in the first place.

If you want to submit a question of your baking idol, please use the form linked below!

(BTW - the likes of Paul and Nigella are probably a little to busy to join in right now...but maybe one day...so perhaps pick a more earthly hero)
